Why is it so tough to shrink chin fat?
Submental or under-the-chin fat does not “respond” well to diet or exercise. Like other types of localized fat deposits, such as flank fat around the waist (“love handles”), submental fat develops due to factors that cannot be controlled with healthy nutrition and a rigorous exercise regimen alone. These factors include a genetic predisposition toward developing a double chin and hormonal fluctuations that occur as we age. For this reason, otherwise trim and slender people can still have a full-looking face and jawline due to the presence of excess fat in this region. It affects men and women of all shapes and sizes.
How do Kybella® injections work?
Kybella® is a non-surgical treatment that involves introducing a synthetic type of deoxycholic acid to the affected area between the head and neck. This molecule is naturally present in our bodies. Its main function is to absorb and break down dietary fat. Once applied precisely and in just the right amounts, the active ingredient in Kybella® selectively dissolves and eliminates the treated fat cells. Unlike other double chin treatments, Kybella® doesn’t just shrink the fat cells; it actually gets rid of them. So, it presents a lasting solution to stubborn fat. There is no other treatment like it for moderate to severe submental fat.
What does it feel like?
We keep any discomfort to a minimum. A local anesthetic may be administered before your injections. Once fully numbed, the whole process of applying Kybella® only takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The injection sites have been precisely “mapped out” to further support an efficient treatment process and the best outcomes. Here again, the time the needle is actually in contact and any associated sensations are kept to a minimum. For some patients, the process is tolerated well with a cold compress or icing of the treated area. We will also review instructions for after-care with you. The most common side effects are temporary and minor swelling, tenderness, red discoloration, and firmness at the injection sites. Cooling can help with these effects, as can wearing a chin strap or compression garment to help with swelling. It’s best to avoid excessive heat from very hot showers or saunas, as they can worsen swelling.

When can I start to see improvement in my chin?
Due to how Kybella® works, the full effects of treatment are revealed gradually. It takes time for the fat cells to be naturally destroyed and eliminated from your body. As this process occurs, you will notice that your lower face looks tighter and more contoured, little by little. Additional treatments may be needed, depending on how your body metabolizes Kybella® and your goals. On average, two to four monthly treatments get permanent results – no touch-ups or maintenance sessions are required!
